What is the anointing John speaks of? What is meant by the “baptism” of the Holy Spirit?
ANOINTED by the HOLY SPIRIT
- 1 John 2:20, 27 & 2 Corinthians 1:21b
- Anointing done by God with the Holy Spirit
- All believers are anointed
- Anointing means “to rub”
- Essential oils, coconut oil, vics vapor rub
- Three (3) Purposes
- Assigned to a Task (Jesus anointed to preach Luke 4:18; Acts 4:27)
- Set Apart, consecrated to God for His purposes
- Apprehend spiritual truth (1 Cor. 2:12-15)
BAPTIZED by the HOLY SPIRIT
- Luke 3:16; Acts 1:4-6; 1 Cor. 12:13
- Baptized with & by the Holy Spirit
- NOT water baptism (error: baptismal regeneration)
- Instantaneous at the moment of faith
- NOT before faith (Calvinism)
- NOT “after” faith (“Subsequence”, Pentecostal and Charismatic)
- Baptism = to dip/to immerse and to take out
- Chocolate dipped ice cream
UNITED to CHRIST
- Spirit baptism forms a real, actual union between us and Christ
- Romans 6:3-5
- Spirit baptism – NOT water
- Union with Christ has 3 Aspects
- Unity in His death (3)
- Unity in living the new life (4)
- Unity in future resurrection (5)
- This spiritual union compels our Christ-like conduct
- 1 Corinthians 6:15-17
UNITED to the BODY
- Romans 12:5; 1 Corinthians 12:13, 27
- Together we who have the Holy Spirit form the Body of Christ
- We are all actually, objectively connected to each other and brought into a common bond (Real, true unity)
- God has done this joining of all believers to Christ and to each other
- Sam’s Club membership
- Union vs Unity. Union is the objective fact of our real union to each other whereas unity is the expression of relational harmony that is intentionally an outgrowth and celebration of that union.
